Camlock Couplings

Before looking at the major types of camlock couplings, it is important to look at some overview information. Camlock couplings are designed with specific requirements in mind. Selecting the right kind of coupling goes a long way in ensuring that we work optimally in a safer environment. Some of the specific requirements camlock couplings are designed to cater for in regards to connecting and disconnecting piping include; swage, internal expansion Rota-lok, built-in nipple, expansion ring e.t.c. Below are some of the main types of camlock couplings.

Major Types of Camlock Couplings
Camlock couplings are usually classified according to the material that makes them. Using this criteria, there are two main types of Camlock couplings namely brass and aluminium camlock couplings. Below is a more in-depth discussion on these two major types of camlock couplings.

1. Brass camlock couplings
Brass camlock couplings enable plumbers to connect as well as disconnect pipes and hoses quickly and efficiently. All Brass camlock couplings operate by opening coupler arms which are then inserted into the coupler. To be able to make a firm/tight join, the arms are usually folded down into specific positions. Brass camlock couplings are usually available in sizes between ½” and 6″. It is important to note that there are various types of Brass camlock couplings. Below are some of the main types.

a. Adapter Brass Type A: These Brass camlock couplings are usually used alongside Type D Adapters. It is also important to note that they can be utilised with Type B, C and DC (Dust Cap) provided the adapters are of similar sizes.

b. Coupler Brass Type B: These Brass camlock couplings are usually used alongside Type E Adapters. They can also be utilised alongside Type A, E and DP (Dust Plug) provided the adapters are of similar sizes.

c. Coupler Brass Type D: These Brass camlock couplings are usually used alongside Type A Adapters. They can also and can also be with alongside Type E, F and DP provided the adapters are of similar sizes.

d. Adapter Brass Type E: These Brass camlock couplings are usually used alongside Type C Adapters. They can also be utilized with Type B, D and DC provided the adapters are of similar sizes.

e. Adapter Brass Type F: These Brass camlock couplings are usually used alongside Type B Adapters. They can also be utilized with Type C, D and DC provided the adapters are of similar sizes.

2. Aluminium camlock couplings
Like Brass camlock couplings, aluminium camlock couplings also help plumbers to connect as well as disconnect hoses quickly and efficiently. The main difference between these two types of camlock couplings is the material that makes them. Some minor differences include; aluminium camlock couplings are lighter in weight.

In regards to size, aluminium camlock couplings also come in sizes between ½” and 6″ inches. Some common types of aluminium camlock couplings include; Adapter Aluminium Type A, Coupler Aluminium Type B, Coupler Aluminium Type C, Coupler Aluminium Type D, Adapter Aluminium Type E and Adapter Aluminium Type F. As mentioned above, the only real difference between Brass and Aluminium camlock couplings is the material that makes them.

For this reason, it is accurate to assume that the above common types of aluminium camlock couplings are used alongside the same adapter types used with brass camlock couplings.
